An Unfortunate Decision; Canceled

Hello all. This update does not bring good news for our Labor Day Weekend plans. I received an email from Commissioner Johnson, of the State of Maine. It reads “I wanted to follow up with you and other venues who contacted me about gathering limits and potential future changes. I appreciate all of the information and recognize the significant impact that COVID-19 has had on your sector and businesses. We met with the public health team regarding the gathering limits and at this time they are not comfortable with an increase, or projecting an increase for a future month. Unfortunately, given national trends and concerns regarding large gatherings, they were not comfortable with an increase for the fall season (or sooner).”

We have held out for as long as we could. When this all started, back in March, our schedule for the 2020 Springfield Fair was pretty well set. And we were excited that we were going to have a great, little 2 day fair. But, given the circumstances, we simply cannot attempt to hold any events until it is safe to do so. I am personally very sorry and all of our dedicated helpers, volunteers and event superintendents feel similarly. But in fairness to our entertainers, livestock exhibitors, vendors, etc. – we need to give them enough notice so as not to cause them undo financial harm.

Even if we were only able to run truck pulls and the Demolition Derby, we were willing to try…. until we realized that we could be endangering our agricultural fair license, not to mention the guilt we would all feel if someone were to get seriously ill, or die, because of something we did.

As much fun as it may be (in the short term) to thumb our collective noses at the government and politely request that they kiss our butts – I’m not sure it would turn out to be our finest hour. So for now, thank you for sticking with us thus far and for hoping, alongside all of our fair crew, that we would be able to celebrate in a big way on Labor Day Weekend. We hope that we have not let you down.

Please know that we will have another edition of the Springfield Fair in 2021. Plus we have a circus booked for late July and have an offer, currently being considered, for a big national country/southern rock band, also in July of 2021. As we firm up contracts, I will keep you all posted. In the meantime, be safe. Don’t let yourselves go friggin’ stir crazy. Have a little fun and keep on being loveable, rednecks that our country needs more of. See ya!
